TPE and Data Integrity Fees: Stay Ahead of Statement Surprises

Small fees can create big questions.

TPE and Data Integrity fees are not always front and center in the payments industry, but they do come up from time to time. When they do, it helps to know what they are, why they happen, and how to prevent them before they become a bigger issue.

These fees are usually small, often just a few cents per event. But when the same issue happens again and again, those fees can add up. More importantly, they can make merchants wonder if something is wrong with their setup or if they are being charged for something they do not understand.

That is why it is worth paying attention.

Why These Fees Matter

A merchant may not care about a few cents at first. But if the fee appears every month, or if it grows over time, it can start to feel like a bigger problem.

When merchants see charges they do not recognize, they naturally ask questions:

What is this fee?
Why is it happening?
Has this been going on for months?
Is something set up incorrectly?

Those questions can quickly turn into frustration. By helping merchants understand and resolve these issues early, partners can protect the relationship and show that they are actively looking out for the merchant’s business.

What Are TPE Fees?

TPE stands for Transaction Processing Excellence. It is a Mastercard program designed to reduce unnecessary transaction activity and prevent certain processing issues.

In simple terms, TPE fees often happen when a transaction is not handled cleanly from start to finish.

A common example is a gratuity-based business, like a restaurant or nail salon, where a transaction is run as a final sale instead of an authorization. Since a sale is final, trying to adjust it later for a tip can create issues. An authorization, on the other hand, can be adjusted properly.

Other TPE issues can happen when authorizations are not reversed, pre-authorizations are not cleared, or declined card transactions are retried too many times.

The main thing to remember is this: TPE issues are usually tied to how the transaction is being processed.

What Are Data Integrity Fees?

Data Integrity fees are different. These are usually tied to the accuracy of merchant or transaction information.

That could mean a ZIP code is incorrect, a DBA does not match across systems, a street address is missing, a merchant ID is formatted incorrectly, or a terminal or application is outdated.

These issues can be frustrating because the information may pass through several places, including the terminal, POS system, middleware, file build, processor, and card brands.

The good news is that many Data Integrity issues are fixable once you know where to look.

Where to Start

If you receive a notification about TPE or Data Integrity fees, start with the merchants listed in the notice. Then look at the billing event or error code to understand what is causing the issue.

For TPE, review how the merchant is processing transactions. Pay special attention to gratuity, pre-authorizations, voids, reversals, and repeated attempts after declines.

For Data Integrity, check the basics first. Make sure merchant information is accurate across the terminal, POS, middleware, and file build. If the equipment or software has not been updated in years, that may also be part of the problem.

If everything looks correct and the issue still cannot be found, it may be time to involve support so the processor side can be reviewed.

A Proactive Approach Helps

These fees may not appear all the time, but that does not mean they should be ignored.

For new merchants, make sure the setup matches how they actually process transactions. For gratuity-based businesses, confirm they are set up correctly for tips. For older merchants, check whether terminals, applications, firmware, or hardware need updates.

A little prevention can help avoid future statement questions.
