A merchant statement looks like a wall of numbers until you know what you’re looking at. Once you do, it’s the fastest way to catch a pricing problem before it costs a merchant real money, or before it costs you a residual you’re owed.
THE BASICS: WHAT’S ACTUALLY ON THE STATEMENT
Every statement breaks down into a few core pieces: gross sales volume, interchange fees (set by the card networks, not your processor), assessment fees (set by Visa, Mastercard, and other networks), and the processor’s own markup on top of those costs.
The markup is the only piece that’s actually negotiable. Interchange and assessments are fixed costs that every processor pays. If a statement doesn’t clearly separate markup from network costs, that’s usually intentional.
INTERCHANGE-LEVEL DETAIL: WHY IT MATTERS
A statement that only shows a blended rate hides the difference between a debit transaction and a premium rewards card swipe, which can carry a meaningfully different interchange cost. Interchange-level reporting shows the actual network cost per transaction category, so you can see exactly what the processor is marking up and by how much.
READING THE RESIDUAL LINE
For ISVs and VARs earning residuals, the statement should show your revenue share calculated against actual net revenue, not a number you have to take on faith. If you can’t trace your residual back to the underlying transactions, you can’t verify it’s correct.
RED FLAGS WORTH WATCHING FOR
- Fees that appear without a clear description of what they cover
- – A markup rate that changed without notice
- – Blended pricing that makes it impossible to see network cost versus processor markup
- – Residual totals that don’t match your own transaction records
HOW BOLD APPROACHES STATEMENT TRANSPARENCY
Bold partners get interchange-level reporting through MX Connect, so every transaction, every fee, and every residual dollar traces back to a specific number you can verify yourself. No blended rates standing in for real detail, and no pricing changes without partner sign-off under Schedule A.
